King David was intimately aware of the divisions among the 12 tribes he was trying to lead. Though they were called the people of God, they often acted otherwise. Though it was called the city of peace, Jerusalem was often filled with strife. As David attempted to govern the diverse factions in a city that should have represented God's kingdom on earth, he was faced with a complicated task. Jerusalem, the city of God, needed some kind of supernatural glue. The king urged God's people to pray for peace.
There are Christians today who are fanatic about praying for the city of Jerusalem. However, from a New Testament perspective, Psalm 122 should be read in light of spiritual Jerusalem - the Body of Christ. We are His temple. We are His city set on a hill. We should represent God's kingdom on earth. But as in the days of David, there remains much division within God's city. We need some glue.
Just before going to the cross, Jesus told his disciples that their love for one another would be a sign to the world. It therefore seems logical that among the things most grievous to him must be strife and division among the members of his family. The city that should be solidly joined together has often been a terrible example of brotherly love. Pray that something changes in all of our hearts. Pray for the peace of God's city - the Body of Christ. When you think of other Christians, especially those with whom you may have a problem, sincerely pray this blessing: "Peace be with you." Though we have many differences, we are still members of the same family and living stones within the holy house of God. Seek the good of those who are part of His Church. Pray for the peace of His people.- Garold & Lori Anderson Cafe Sofia
